Bic Runga, or Briolette Kahbic Runga which is here actual name, is of Chinese and Maori heritage, born and raised in Christchurch, on New Zealand's South Island. Bic now lives between Auckland (near to her parents and two sisters) and wherever else in the world she needs to be.
Drums were eleven year old Bic's first passion; by her mid-teens she was singing with jazz groups. At school she toyed with ambitions of becoming a poet but, after taking up guitar and keyboards, channelled her muse into writing her own songs. Bic moved to Auckland in 1994 to pursue a recording career, and spent a year writing, performing and building a reputation with her powerful solo live shows.
In early 1997, Bic recorded her debut album Drive - over a two month period with one engineer and a handful of musicians - and produced it herself.
Bic Runga’s uniquely phrased pop songs and hauntingly beautiful melodies have already earned her a special place in the pantheon of New Zealand songs. Her third album Birds is released in New Zealand on 28 November 2005.
Since emerging at 19 years old with her debut single ’Drive’ a decade ago, Bic has travelled a remarkable musical journey, taking her to the top of charts at home and around the world at the same time as winning enormous critical acclaim for her winsome, transfixing tunes.
