Ron Jarzombek (Gordian Knot, Spastic Ink) is a unique guitar talent who has been breaking the boundaries of the heavier side of the progressive scene for a while. Most of the old school rockers may know Ron Jarzombek of the tech thrash band Watchtower with their masterpiece ‘Control & Resistance’ (1989).
Blotted Science is Ron’s new project. The line-up consists of bassist Alex Webster (Cannibal Corpse, Hate Eternal) and drummer Charlie Zeleny (Jordan Rudess). Their debut album ‘Machinations of Dementia’ can be described as progressive metal of the highest standard, playing beyond the boundaries of death metal.
This isn’t your average prog metal album and it’s the loudest work of Ron Jarzombek so far. First of all it’s an instrumental album but you don’t really miss any vocals and although it’s a complex album it’s still accessible. The songs are really making sense and there is a good mix of loud riffs and epic pieces. The musicians switch very easily from unexpected polymeters to intense fragile soft pieces.
After the department of Chris Adler (Lamb of God) and Derek Roddy (Hate Eternal, Nile) Charlie Zeleny joined the metal trio. Charlie plays with a lot of dynamics and nows how to accent the riffs on his hihat en cymbals. His playing is really tight and he doesn’t seem to have any problem with the high tempos and odd time signatures, he even throws in some blast beats. Fans of Meshuggah, Death and Textures should definitely pick up this album.
After all it’s a great album for all prog freaks out there. Much credit goes to Alex Webster, who delivers a jaw dropping performance playing with his fingers. Blotted Science equals musical insanity. If you’re new in this genre this album may sound chaotic, but it should be heard by anyone interested in madness delivered with surgery precision.
